Newcastle United v Liverpool Betting Tips – 1st October 2017

There’s been a lot made so far about this being the 25th year since the formation of the Premier League (or Premiership as it was then known). We’ve seen some wonderful matches in that quarter of a century but the one that routinely gets mentioned as the best of all time is Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Newcastle in 1996. These two giants of English football have had their ups and downs since that game and both sides are desperate for a win when they meet on Sunday at St James’ Park.

It’s been very much feast or famine for Newcastle since they won promotion back into the top flight last season. The Magpies kicked off with two defeats, then went on a run of three wins in a row before losing to Brighton last weekend. The Toon Army who follow their team up and down the country know that their side lacks quality compared to opponents like Liverpool who are expected to push for the top four but in Rafa Benitez, Newcastle have one of the best managers in the league. Benitez’s tactical nous and ability to organise his team means Newcastle can perform above themselves. The same, however, cannot be said about Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

After arriving at Anfield with such a big fanfare, things are starting to go a little sour for Klopp. Although he has assembled a team full of wonderful attacking talent, Liverpool’s inability to defend well enough, consistently enough has already cost them points in both the Premier League and Champions League. Incredible as it sounds, some Liverpool fans have called for the manager’s head. Those fans will demand a victory in the North East on Sunday but they may end up even more disappointed than they were after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow.

Betting Predictions

  • Newcastle/draw double chance - Liverpool’s draw in Moscow is not the first time they’ve struggled to break teams down. It took a stroke of luck to beat Crystal Palace 1-0 while Burnley nabbed a point at Anfield a fortnight ago and Newcastle will fancy their chances of imposing another frustrating afternoon on Klopp and his players. Not only are the home side very well organised but they are quality from set pieces (a real weakness of Liverpool’s) which makes the Newcastle/draw double chance look very good value at 5/4 with Bet365.
  • Under 2.5 goals - The big shock from Liverpool’s midweek Champions League game was that they could only score once despite playing the so called ‘fab four’ of Sadio Mané, Philippe Coutinho, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino. Those four could all start against Newcastle but you can be sure that Benitez will have plans for them. This is not set up to be a classic renewal of this fixture so take the 5/4 that BetVictor are quoting on under 2.5 goals.
  • Joselu to score first - There’s always a huge amount of pressure being the main striker at Newcastle and Joselu has not taken well to it since his move from Stoke. Surprisingly, many of his former teammates rate him as a world class finisher so if he can get it right between the ears, he may win over the Toon Army by scoring Sunday’s first goal at 7/1 with Coral.
