Hoffenheim v Liverpool Betting Tips – 15th August 2017

Liverpool fans have been waiting two years to return to the Champions League. Thanks to a fourth place finish last season, Jurgen Klopp’s team have a chance of playing against Europe’s elite but first they have to come through a two legged tie against Hoffenheim.

Whereas Liverpool have won the Champions League five times, this is Hoffenheim’s first ever European tie. Their fourth place finish in last season’s Bundesliga was their best domestic finish and Julian Nagelsmann’s men are confident that they can take that form onto the European stage.

Liverpool are the favourites for Tuesday’s game but this Hoffenheim side are used to performing well against the odds. The season before last they narrowly avoided relegation and nobody was tipping them for a European finish this time a year ago. But almost everything went well last season. Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig were the only teams who had a better record in both attack and defence than Hoffenheim last term. They also went the whole season unbeaten at home, a run which included a 1-0 win against Bayern.

Although everyone involved with Liverpool was delighted to finish fourth there are still plenty of areas for Klopp to improve. He’ll hope that the signings of Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson will plug some gaps but the ongoing saga around Philippe Coutinho’s potential move to Barcelona could well see Liverpool lose their most important player. Klopp has claimed that Coutinho’s attitude remains first class and the little Brazilian has been included in the squad for the trip to Germany. If he starts, Liverpool’s chances will be improved but make no mistake about it, this is going to be a very tough game for the Reds.

Betting Predictions

  • Hoffenheim to win - Hoffenheim are the underdogs both to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League and for Tuesday’s match. Liverpool certainly have the stronger side on paper but Hoffenheim’s record is so good at home that you’ve got to think the 21/10 that Bet365 are quoting on them looks like very good value. Liverpool should be able to capitalise on their second leg at Anfield but it’s likely that they will have a deficit to overcome next week.
  • Over 2.5 goals - It’s not just Liverpool who are aware that playing the second leg at home gives them an advantage. Nagelsmann will be imploring his players to go all out for a big win so as to give them a cushion for the return leg. The home side have more than enough quality to score two or three goals (although they are sweating on the fitness of Sandro Wagner) but their attacking intent could give Liverpool space to exploit. So, make sure to have a bet on over 2.5 goals at 4/5 with BetVictor.
  • Hoffenheim to score in the first 10 minutes - Hoffenheim will fancy their chances of catching Liverpool cold in the early stages. The home side will likely come out of the blocks flying and to take advantage of that you can back them to score in the first 10 minutes at 7/1 with Sky Bet.
