Chelsea v Sunderland Betting Tips – 21st May 2017

Go back through the history of the Premier League and you’d struggle to find two teams going up against one another with as big a difference in team morale as Chelsea and Sunderland. While Chelsea have bagged the league title and are looking for a record 30 wins in one Premier League season, Sunderland are rock bottom and are about to see a mass exodus of players as they slip into the Championship.

It’s been a week of celebration for Chelsea. First, they danced, sung and sprayed champagne after securing the title with the 1-0 win at the Hawthorns and then the team’s fringe players were involved in a thoroughly entertaining match against Watford at Stamford Bridge. There will be more partying among the Blues’ fans when they see their team awarded the trophy but the team must return to work on Sunday. Antonio Conte made nine changes for the Watford game but with the FA Cup final to come against Arsenal, he’ll want his first choice team to show keep sharp by putting Sunderland to the sword.

Sunderland go into Sunday’s game on the back of a battling but ultimately pointless game against Arsenal. David Moyes’ team took to the Emirates pitch doubtless with something to prove. Their own manager agreed with Alan Shearer’s assessment that Sunderland’s performance against Swansea last weekend was “pathetic” and, at last, some professional pride kicked in. At least that’s what optimists would say. Cynics would suggest that the players were simply trying to impress so that they can find new clubs in the summer.

Ultimately, Sunday’s game at Stamford Bridge will be all about Chelsea. Sunderland will be happy to play a background role and allow the Blues to get on with their celebrations. This may be the last game that many of the Black Cats players will play for the club but there is no chance of them ending on a high.

Betting Predictions

  • Chelsea to win to nil - The bookies know that this is a hugely one sided match and have done their best to stop punters trying to buy money by backing Chelsea by making them the heavy odds on favourites. However, you can still make a decent profit from a Chelsea win if you team it with them keeping a clean sheet at 4/6 with BetVictor. The Blues were sloppy at the back against Watford but with players looking to secure their place in the cup final side, they’ll be much more like the Chelsea we’ve seen all season.
  • Diego Costa to score first - John Terry scored perhaps his final goal at Stamford Bridge against Watford on Monday night and Diego Costa could do likewise against Sunderland. The Spain international has been heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea in the summer and could prove his worth to the clubs vying for his signature by scoring first at 9/4 with Ladbrokes.
  • Chelsea to win with a -3 goal handicap - If you want to win big from a Chelsea win you could back them to win with a three goal handicap at 4/1 with Ladbrokes. They are miles better than Sunderland and could end their league campaign with a handsome win.
